Practical strategies for moving forward when you hate your boss
Is your boss someone you can’t stand being around? You’re not alone. Some of the latest statistics estimate that 50% of workers in the U.S. have quit a job primarily because of their manager.
If your boss is someone who micromanages your team, gossips, plays favorites (and you aren’t one of them), or has otherwise created a toxic work environment, it’s time for you to move forward and create other options. Here are a few things to consider when you hate your boss:
Dislike vs. Despise
We all come across people who we don’t get along with, so it’s important to evaluate whether your boss is simply someone you don’t care for, or if they’re a person you hate being around.
Does your boss have a personality that tends to conflict with your own? Do they have small habits that annoy you, but aren’t significantly impacting your ability to work? Venting about some of these characteristics may be justified, but they may not be so bad that you need to find a new job.
If, on the other hand, their actions or words are toxic, harmful, or derogatory, you should do something about it. These scenarios are unhealthy for you and those around you. You deserve better so give yourself permission to move on.
Make a Move
Are there any opportunities to move to another department or office within the same company? This is a great way to stay with a good company that has a healthy workplace culture.
On the flip side, sometimes the best move to make is to seek an entirely new job at a different company. Starting the job search again isn’t always a fun step when trying to leave a negative workplace, but it can offer the ultimate relief from a boss you hate.
