Unpaid Promotions

Have you ever gotten more responsibilities at work after another employee was laid off or resigned?

Don't do the work of more than one person or substantially more complex work without asking for a pay increase and promotion.

Write a job description and share it with your manager. Let them know that the work you are doing today is different from when you started and what specifically changed.

Then ask if they can give you a pay increase to recognize the increase in your job responsibilities. And a new job title to recognize the promotion can also be part of your "ask."

And don't forget to update your resume and LinkedIn profile. That way if your employer doesn't take care of you, you can take care of yourself and start your job search.

Employers - Stop taking advantage of your high performing employees by adding to their workload or adding significantly more complex work to their responsibilities. Recognizing what you are doing with a pay increase and promotion isn't difficult. Just do it.
