Planning for the Pay Increase Conversation

November 27, 2023 Denise Liebetrau

Many of you are thinking about asking your manager for a pay raise. Here are the steps to use when planning that conversation.

1.      Research and know your worth. Go to ProsperConsultingLLC.com > Resources > Free Pay Data.  Also summarize pay data you are seeing on job postings.

2.      Write your SOAR stories. Situation – Obstacles – Actions – Results

3.      What are your employer’s biggest goals? What are the obstacles to reaching those goals? Write talking points related to how you positively impacted those goals and obstacles.

4.      Plan and practice your negotiation. Be curious, patient, and persistent. Listen more than you talk.  Ask questions. Demonstrate your empathy skills. Stay flexible. Find win-win solutions.

You must have something of value to offer an employer. If they don’t value what you provide, you won’t get a pay increase.

If you don’t meet or exceed their expectations, you won’t get a pay increase.

If your employer isn’t meeting their EBITDA, sales or revenue goals and you see an extreme focus on expense control, you won’t get a pay raise. Carefully choose when to have the pay raise conversation with your manager.

The process sounds simple, but the devil is in the details. If you need help, let’s talk.
