I have said that more times than I can count.
Usually, I have said this about the job in a salary survey that is being chosen as a match for an employer’s job.
The person doing the “apples to oranges” comparison is:
· Using the survey job title to determine the match instead of the job responsibilities.
· Looking at the compensation numbers in the salary survey to choose the match instead of comparing the survey job description to the employer job description.
· Using an employer job description that is not an accurate reflection of the actual work being performed.
· Has looked at the employees’ pay and used that to choose the survey match.
· Not intentionally choosing the data cut from the survey that is aligned to the employer’s competitors for talent.
I love apples and oranges.
Just not when it comes to making compensation comparisons.
