When I was in my early twenties and just starting my career, I asked my manager what classes I should take to continue to grow and learn. I focused on getting my CCP or Certified Compensation Professional designation.
Then I started taking courses that were aligned to my interests outside of my current job as a Compensation Analyst.
That meant I became a Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) and Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS). Eventually, I got a job in benefits and used this knowledge to contribute to a large Fortune 500 firm.
I found out that I liked compensation work more than benefits.
Then in my 40s I decided to say “yes” to coaching. I took a six-month online course about playing bigger. Then I said “yes” to another program about weight loss and lost over 40 pounds. Then I became a coach and helped others lose weight.
Then I took another course that helped me start my consulting company and figure out my ideal clients, how to sell, and use marketing tactics.
Here is what I know now. Invest in what inspires you. If you don’t know how it fits with your career goals, do the program anyway.
The one constant in life is change. And improving skills and self-awareness will always help you navigate what you are dealing with today and what happens tomorrow that you didn’t expect.
