We determine what is fair by considering not only our own situation, but also the situations of others whom we use as comparisons to ourselves.
We want pay-related decisions that are impartial and just. We want pay-related decisions that are without favoritism or discrimination.
Tell your employees the following:
1. Who gets how much for what?
2. How are pay decisions made?
Then ask employees at all levels these questions:
1. How do you feel about what I’ve shared with you?
2. Do you believe you were treated fairly? Why or why not?
3. What other questions do you have?
Be sure to actively listen.
Active listening is the practice of preparing to listen. Observe the verbal and non-verbal messages. Provide empathetic feedback for the sake of showing attentiveness to the messages.
Repeat.
And if you need help, let’s talk.
Employers are developing their pay transparency strategy proactively. If you aren’t, you will struggle to attract and retain the employees you need.
