I went to the Barbie movie recently with my 19-year-old daughter. It was also the last evening we spent together before I left her in the city where she goes to college.
One of the quotes from the movie that I keep reflecting on is:
“We mothers stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they have come.” –Ruth Handler: Barbie’s Inventor (The character is played by the actress Rhea Perlman.)
Many of us are working each day with a focus on changing the gender pay gap. We want to solve the pay inequities that exist in the world and strive to positively influence the workplace, so it is better for everyone.
I recognize the women who came before me and appreciate their courage and sacrifice.
I choose to be part of the solution by helping employers provide competitive and equitable pay.
I choose to be part of the solution by coaching high performers, so they get paid what they are worth.
I choose to be part of the solution by speaking on pay transparency, workplace equity, and the difficult conversations that are necessary to support the actions that make a sustainable difference.
What legacy are you leaving for the next generation?
Go see the Barbie movie if you haven’t already. Take a friend or family member.
Talk about what is said and what is not said by the characters.
Talk about the Real World, the Barbie World, and what makes them different.
And choose to be part of the solution instead of the problem.
