One of the most frustrating aspects of being a new employee is the software and technology problems that occur during the onboarding process.
I have a friend who had to wait a month to start a new job. His new employer was not able to get the laptop and other software logins ready for him to start sooner.
And when he did start, there was a lot of software and file sharing tools that did not work well. It took more than 2 months after his start date to get most of this fixed.
The amount of productivity lost and frustration it caused was extraordinary.
Every time my team and I are given access to employer client shared folders, files, and software there are problems.
What should take a week often takes a month or more to solve so we can ramp up and be at full productivity to progress the deliverables.
Why am I sharing this?
If you want to retain talent whether that is employees, consultants, or contractors, solve your onboarding technology and software problems.
Think about how easy it is to order something as a consumer on Amazon. The customer experience is great. No hiccups when you put something in the shopping cart. The items arrive fast. Returns are easy.
Make the employee onboarding experience great. Seamless. Easy. No hurdles or frustrations.
Make the consultant and contractor onboarding experience remarkable. Are they bragging about how easy it is to work with you?
You can pay people a lot of money but that doesn’t make up for the onboarding shirt show that seems to exist everywhere.
Rant over. I am digging deep for patience today as I try to solve the tech issues that never seem to end.
