Adaptable Career Levels: Standard vs. Flexible Job Titles

February 22, 2024 Denise Liebetrau

Job architecture projects typically include a Career Level document that defines what each level requires related to:

·        Scope

·        Complexity

·        Problem Solving

·        Accountability

·        Impact

·        Discretion

·        Interaction

·        Supervision

·        Knowledge and Experience

And then the labels for the Career Levels are typically:

·        Craft = C1 to C3

·        Support = S1 to S4

·        Professional = P1 to P4

·        Management = M1 to M4

·        Executive = E1 to E4

Of course, the number of levels in each category vary based on size of company and the work performed.  And the categories vary as well.

I often have employer clients who want to use standard job titles for the individual contributor jobs.

·        Example: Instead of using P1 – P4, they want to use Assistant, Coordinator, Specialist, and Senior Specialist as the Career Level labels.

·        I always try to get them to embrace the use of P1 – P4 because not all professions should have the same job title at the same Career Level.

·        Some individual contributor jobs should be titled with terms like Operator, Analyst, Technician, and Clerk.

It is far easier to have standard job titles for people managers that align to the Career Levels. For instance,…

·        M1 – M4 is Supervisor, Manager, Sr Manager, and Director.

·        E1 – E4 is VP, SVP, EVP, and CEO.

Thoughts?
