One of the many things my team and I spend time on for employer clients is job evaluations.
What’s job evaluation? Job evaluation is a systematic process of assessing the value of jobs to determine the compensation to be paid to employees performing those jobs.
This means that we are reading employer job descriptions and comparing those to the descriptions in salary surveys to find a match. Once we find a match or more than one match, we can determine what is a competitive base salary range and incentive targets.
There are job titles that are commonly used but have different job responsibilities between employers. Here are some examples:
· Project Manager
· Operations Manager
· Business Development Representative
· Marketing Manager
· Analyst
· Consultant
· Engineer
· Manager
· Director
· Technician
Be careful when you are titling a job . Make sure that you aren’t over or under titling the role and ensure that the title aligns to the job description text.
This is why we often write “job titling guidelines” to support consistency and standardization.
More pay equity and transparency laws are being passed each year. It can cause confusion with employees and candidates when you use general job titles.
Read the job description and then title the job. And if you need help cleaning up your job titles and aligning them to the work performed, then let’s talk.
