What Matters Most? Money, Relationships, or Work Satisfaction

April 10, 2024 Denise Liebetrau

Most of us go to work because of the money.

We need the paycheck to pay our bills, give, save, and invest. Although giving, saving, and investing are not happening for many people these days.

It’s great if you like the work you do. But many are just doing what they must for their paycheck.

It is even better if you like the people you work with. Relationships at home and at work are often challenging.

And it’s terrific if you believe in the products, services, and impact your employer is delivering.

When employers ask me what they need to do to get ALL their employees to be high performers, I tell them that they can’t. That’s an impossible goal.

ALL employees aren’t going to be high performers.

If you want to maximize the performance of your team, recognize that some of them are just there for the money and that’s okay.

The best thing you can do is connect authentically with each person and ask what they need.

Give them the resources (time, training, equipment, people, and money) to get the right work done.

And don’t make their lives miserable or cause them to suffer.

Be kind. Listen. Make sure they know that you care, and they matter.
