Tell me how you would handle this situation.
Scenario:
· A valuable employee is paid at the maximum of the base salary range. The employer does not give pay increases to employees in this situation.
· There are no promotion opportunities. The employer doesn’t need higher level work to be done by this employee.
· There is no budget available for a retention bonus.
· The employee is a high performer and has worked at the company for 10 years.
· You don’t have a merit increase program this year and are not paying the annual bonus because the goals were not achieved.
What advice do you have for the employee’s manager who wants to retain this employee?
1. Ensure that you are meeting with this employee regularly to understand what resources they need to continue to be successful.
2. Gain an understanding of what they enjoy about their job and the workplace. Continue to give them those things.
3. Develop a relationship where they feel safe telling you the things that keep them up at night. Help them solve those problems.
4. Celebrate their success and recognize their contributions consistently.
5. Ask them if they like private or public recognition and then deliver it in the manner they like.
6. Make sure the employee knows they matter and that you care about their well-being.
