When you are developing your compensation communications plan and resources, remember that:
· The average human attention span is only 8.25 seconds.
· 54% of adults have literacy below the 6th-grade level in the U.S.
This means that your audience needs simple, short, and relevant key messages delivered just in time.
If you are planning a 2-hour compensation training session for managers as you get ready for the annual compensation planning cycle, stop. Rethink how you can deliver the key messages in a shorter more concise format.
One approach is to think about how you interact with companies as a customer. For example, let’s say you have a question about your bill for cell phone. What do you do first?
1. You probably go to the website and see if the question is answered there.
2. Or you chat online with a service rep.
3. Or you could call the 800-customer service number and talk to a rep.
4. Or you send a question via the company website to someone. And then you wait a few days (or forever) for a response.
5. Or you watch a short video that explains your billing statement.
Great companies think about the customer experience and how to address the most common customer issues and deliver answers in many ways.
HR and Compensation leaders should be taking the same approach to the employee experience. Give your customers (employees) the answers to their compensation questions in multiple ways.
Keep your approach simple, short, relevant, and just in time.
In-person facilitated training sessions are being replaced by short videos, common questions and answers documents, step by step guides, and well-trained service reps.
On demand consumption is the norm for us in our personal lives. Why not re-think your compensation training and delivery of service to be more aligned to this experience?
We make things overly complicated when the simplest solutions can produce a large impact.
Time is your most scarce resource. It is also the scarcest resource of your employees. Use it wisely.
