Boost Your Career by Understanding the Prosperity Exchange in Work Relationships

A shift in habits and mindset at work can boost your career

It’s the first hour of your workday. You likely arrived at the office, grabbed a cup of coffee or tea, checked voicemail and email, and organized your calendar for the day. That one hour every day represents just some of the habits and patterns we tend to create throughout our working lives, but have you stopped to consider whether your patterns serve to boost your career?

Routines can create stability and comfort, but they can also lead to stagnation. Rather than viewing each day as a series of to-dos, putting out fires for others and sitting in endless meetings, I challenge you to think of your career in terms of your own prosperity.

When you make this mindset shift, your to-do list won’t disappear, but your approach to projects will take on a whole new meaning. You might also realize that a career move will help you achieve deeper satisfaction with both work and life.

Prosperity: More Than a Paycheck

Many of the clients who seek my career coaching help have reached a stage in their careers where they feel stuck. They see their jobs as “just a paycheck” – and they feel undervalued by their employers. They also tend to focus on time away from work as real life and work hours as drudgery.

Sound familiar? While it’s a common experience, I believe that your career should offer more real-life satisfaction than that. You worked for years to develop your expertise, knowledge and skill set. Those years, and the 40+ hours you put in every week, should count for something more than the total on your pay stub.

In my view, prosperity encompasses more than wealth. It extends beyond your bank account and includes your health, well-being and sense of purpose in life. Truly prosperous people thrive at work and in life. And not just once in a while. They are prosperous each day because they’ve made the shift in their mindset and habits.

When you begin to view your work as an integral part of your prosperity and lifestyle, you place more value on each hour you devote to it.

Understanding the Prosperity Exchange

In my work with employers, I discuss an idea called the Prosperity Exchange. In short, the exchange is a cycle of give and take between employee and employer that looks like this:

Good employers know that quality employees deserve recognition and compensation (in the form of a competitive rewards package; not just salary) in exchange for their contributions to the company’s success. This system creates a self-sustaining cycle for everyone involved.

From an employee perspective, when you approach your career with a prosperity mindset, you fully understand what you bring to the table for your employer. You also understand how supporting your company’s success creates abundance for yourself.

However, too many individuals underestimate their own value and contributions. In your career, do you approach interactions with your managers and executives with uncertainty and maybe even a little fear? Imagine how it would feel to walk into each of these work relationships confident in your value and your ability to deliver quality work.

A prosperity mindset can help you achieve a stronger sense of purpose in your career, which in turn creates more value for your employer.
