Starting Again

The new year is about to begin and for many it means setting new year’s resolutions.

But there is a secret I want to share. You don’t have to wait until January 1st to start. If you want to change something, each moment is an opportunity to begin again.

You ate some candy that wasn’t on your diet plan, start again in the next moment. Take a deep breath and know that it is consistency over the long-term that matters.

You didn’t get any exercise today and it is 9 pm. Start again with some stretching and gently let go of the inner critic who is loud and needs to shut up.

You didn’t organize the closet like you had planned. Recognize you are human, and you can start again by putting three items in the donation box. The closet will be there for you to tackle the next day.

You smoked a cigarette, and you are trying to quit. Start again in the next moment. Not the next day. Not on Sunday.

You are worthy of love. So, the next time you do not rise to the expectations you have for yourself, take a moment to pause and reassess.

Practice self-compassion and recognize that each moment is a gift. Deciding to change is the first step. Committing to the change is next. And starting again and again in each moment is what supports your success.

Don’t give up on yourself. Let go of perfect. Persist.
