When I was a kid, sitting and doing nothing was considered lazy. I grew up on a farm and there were always weeds to pull in the garden, an animal that needed to be fed, or equipment that needed to be fixed. Shit needed to be shoveled. (Seriously, the amount of shit I have shoveled…) And, of course, in the house there was a floor to clean, a load of laundry to do, and dishes to wash.
That focus on being productive has been my default for so long.
For many of us our self-worth is tied to our productivity.
Do you think that taking care of yourself is laziness? Meditating, going for a walk, having food delivered instead of making it at home, and taking a nap aren’t lazy. They are choices that reflect your prioritization of self-care.
Do you choose productivity over self-care? Do you judge others for their actions that reflect self-care?
Our worth is inherent in us because we are. We exist. We don’t need to be productive to have value.
In a world that values what you deliver, results, and outcomes, pause and consider being lazy for a while.
And as you write that self-assessment in the performance feedback process many employees and managers are in right now, know that what you “do” should be balanced with just “being.”
