The executives demanding that their employees work from the office believe it is the best way to get the work done so they can meet their goals.
The employees, who work from home and want to continue, believe that is the best way to get their work done so they can meet their goals.
Both are demanding that their approach is the best way forward.
What I don't see is consideration and a discussion about what goals each has.
Many of us have changed our goals since Covid changed our lives in 2020.
We enjoy commuting to our home office in our fuzzy slippers.
We like taking a walk in our neighborhood mid-day. Or we like doing yoga or stretching to ease the muscle aches that come from sitting for hours.
We enjoy having our dog or cat at our feet or in our space as we work.
The introverts are in their happy zone not having to be around a lot of colleagues and not having to socialize when they would prefer to recharge quietly.
Pausing and listening. Great leaders do this with intention.
So, the path forward could be a request instead of a demand. Here is what that sounds like.
"I'm frustrated and longing for some consideration and empathy. Would you be willing to listen to my goals? And then I want to listen to your goals."
Listen. Ask clarifying questions. Take your time. Embrace the pause.
Then brainstorm solutions that consider the goals of each party in the dialogue.
THAT level of connection and respect will go a long way to building a healthy workplace culture.
Relationships are the foundation of life and of meeting your goals. Don't shortchange the process.
Each person’s needs are equal to the other person’s needs.
I know. THIS may be the most difficult aspect to embrace in the process.
Compromise isn’t a bad outcome. It is essential to a great life.
