Business suits and dresses aren’t worn much anymore. I had oodles of them until I recently decluttered my closet. I kept a couple and said goodbye to the rest.
I felt lighter after taking the big box to Goodwill. I let go of a version of myself that isn’t needed anymore.
Now I’m sitting here in my office and am thinking about paper and other work related stuff that I could get rid of.
How often do we hang on to things that no longer serve us?
I like data, research, books, and information. It gives me comfort to be surrounded by this stuff because “I may need it someday.” (Why do we tell lies to ourselves?)
The reality is that I just Google things. Find what I need. Use it. And then move on.
So, I’m gonna do another decluttering session over the weekend. My office is gonna be different on Monday.
Today, I also said goodbye to a business relationship. It just didn’t provide enough of a return to justify the time and energy I was spending on it. I didn’t enjoy the people or the work anymore.
If you want to see what is important to someone, look at their calendar. What are they spending time on?
And if you want to go deeper, look at their bank account. What are they spending money on?
I’m becoming better at recognizing when my time and money are being spent on things not in alignment with my values.
