A recent coaching client shared that this was her goal. So, I asked some questions:
How long have you been performing your current job?
What performance feedback have you received from your manager?
Do you have the skills and experience needed to be viewed as qualified for the job you want to be promoted to?
Do you tell your value story to your manager and others who will be involved in the decision to promote you?
Does your manager know you want to be promoted?
Has your employer laid off employees recently?
What do the senior leaders say about how the company is performing?
Have you researched what the competitive pay range is for the new job? How does that compare to your current base pay and bonus?
What’s your pay negotiation strategy?
What will you do if you don’t get promoted this year?
Getting promoted isn’t always easy. And it usually takes more than one conversation to make it happen.
The timing of that conversation with your manager, what you say, and how you say it matter. A lot.
If this is your goal this year, let’s talk.
