”Nothing is more important than empathy for another human being’s suffering. Nothing. Not career, not wealth, not intelligence, certainly not status. We have to feel for one another if we’re going to survive with dignity.” —Audrey Hepburn
I’ve been thinking a lot about empathy lately.
The war in Gaza and Israel has my attention and so does the Russia Ukraine war.
There is the conflict in the U.S. government related to filling the House speaker role.
We have a conflict between employees and employers. Employees must now return to the office when they were expecting their employer to continue to let them work remotely.
The UAW strike is expanding, and workers are walking out of plants to influence the negotiations.
There is a mindset of “us vs. them” between countries, within governments, in workplaces, and in families.
And yet I have hope because there are still leaders who show up with empathy and compassion. These leaders look into the eyes of another person and see common interests and needs.
They look for ways to solve problems and not escalate conflict. They look for solutions and ways to compromise that honors the needs of both parties.
In a world torn apart by differences, align yourself with those who have developed their empathy skills and are willing to act with compassion.
We desperately need peace to not just survive but thrive.
