What does it take to end a toxic relationship or commit to a job search? Pain.
As human beings we like comfort. We don’t like to change things because if we do, we must deal with the pain of the transition to what is new.
For example, let’s say you dread going to work. You don’t like the work you do or maybe you don’t like the people you work with. You don’t trust your manager, the people around you are negative, you are being paid less than you deserve, no career path exists, or you don’t believe in your employer’s vision and leaders.
Whatever it is that is making you miserable, the pain of your current work situation is bad. So bad that it feels better to walk away and deal with the pain of doing a job search, interviewing, getting up to speed in a new job, learning what your new manager wants from you, and how to successfully interact with your new coworkers.
Each of us makes choices in our daily lives. What coffee drink do you order at Starbucks? What clothes do you wear? What vehicle do you drive? Who are you dating? Who are you married to? What do you do after work to relax? What job do you have and what is the paycheck?
Habits are formed and we get comfortable with what is. And thinking about changing can be overwhelming.
Imagine being in a workplace with people that cause you to laugh and smile more. Imagine looking forward to going to work and getting a bigger paycheck. Imagine feeling good in your body again and not having the aches and pains you do today.
Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.
Pay attention to the pain associated with not changing. Create a vision for your future that is so compelling that you are willing to commit and do whatever is needed.
It is easy to think you don’t have a choice. You do. We all do. Prioritize your needs and choose what is necessary to bring you happiness, health, and prosperity.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Success and freedom are on the other side of comfort.
